Essay Topics on NYC in the 70s
Essay Topics on NYC in the 70'sIn his famous essay 'The Other New York', John F. Kennedy wrote that in the year 2020 he hoped that America would be writing essays on NYC in the 70's to teach our children about this part of the country. I can't help but feel that it's time for one of those essays. The First World War saw the collapse of New York City and the Army ran out of buildings to blast, causing many a disaster. I recently watched a movie on television about World War II called 'Last Days in New York'. During that period in history, so many New Yorkers were killed or wounded, that people had nowhere to go. It's also believed that a third of the city was lost during the war. It's no wonder that after the war ended that many New Yorkers decided that they wanted to live in a different part of the country, a place they were assured would be safe from war and crime. After all, there were great prospects for money and opportunity in those parts of the country. However, it was not to be, and it did take Seattle and Portland years to recover. The arrival of the Pacific Northwest Railway changed the face of America, and these areas became known as boomtowns. Soon the then mayor of Seattle said:'These are people living in small box communities in concrete jungles. They've got real jobs, they're doing real things, they've got a real opportunity, and yet they're in some of the most neglected areas of our country.'His sentiment, that these boomtowns were a disgrace to the state of Washington, was echoed by many in the state, and Seattle took the initiative to build the Westlake Center, which housed local businesses and corporations. It was a model for other cities in the country. And so it is with the many localities throughout the United States, which decided that they would either relocate or open a new business in a place of their own.All over America today, people are moving to New York, but it isn't quite the same. It is also a wonderful city to study because of its many interesting landmarks and historic sights, and since there is not much crime, there are plenty of opportunities. So, let's write an essay about NYC in the 70's to help our children learn more about this time period and the struggles that we all went through at the time. Maybe it will even inspire us to think about moving into a different part of the country someday.
